THE FIRST event of Wirral's Borough of Culture year will light up Hamilton Square next month.
Created by the award-winning Illuminos, Animated Square will project the tale of Birkenhead's history on to the town hall on Saturday, March 23.
The creators attempted to unearth as many stories as they could about the town's past, present and future and even visited the Wirral Archives, Birkenhead Priory, Birkenhead Library, Birkenhead Park, Bidston Windmill and Cammell Laird to hear from historians and archivists.
There will also be a free family festival taking place during the event where visitors will be able to enjoy a fun fair, food stalls, circus performers, characters and illuminations around the square.
Entertainment will be provided by several groups including; Wilfred Owen Choir, The Luminelles, Kaboodle, River Sign Choir and the Birkenhead School Choir.
Wirral Council leader Phil Davies told the Globe: “I’m delighted that Animated Square is returning as the curtain raiser for our Borough of Culture programme.
"The projection was an enormous success last year and we’re looking forward to even more people enjoying it this time around.
“The show that Illuminos have created for this event really captures what our Borough of Culture year is all about – sharing stories that have defined Wirral and celebrating what makes the peninsula such a special place.”
Animated Square first appeared in Birkenhead last year as part of the Tall Shops Regatta in May.
