A CASH boost of up to £12 million could help to transform Winsford town centre.

A new £675 million Future High Streets Fund has been set up by the government to help local areas to respond and adapt to changes.

Winsford councillors have vowed to support Cheshire West and Chester Council in a bid for a share of this funding which is being developed buy the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Cllr Brian Clarke told members of the town council on Monday evening: "This is good for Winsford."

CWAC has checked all the details of the bid, he said, and discovered they meet the criteria and are eligible to submit two expressions of interest because of the size of the authority.

As part of the application, councils have to show that they have the support of businesses, residents and community organisations in the town.

The authority is now seeking support letters from stakeholders to support the bid.

The Future High Streets Fund will provide co-funding towards capital projects that bring transformative change.

The government is inviting bids that will see the regeneration of town centres through innovative proposals around transport, housing delivery and public services.

"The council is submitting bids for Winsford and Ellesmere Port," said Cllr Clarke. "If we are successful we could get up to £12 million. We need it for our shopping centre. It will be a great boost for us."

Town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis said: "Let's hope it is successful."
