MOTORWAY police officers had to stop a driver after spotting their sat nav was blocking their view of the road.

The motorist was pulled over by police on the M56 heading for Manchester Airport.

A spokesman added: "This vehicle was stopped and the driver was given advice regarding the placement of his sat nav.

"This was clearly obstructing his view and directly in his line of sight.

"You must have a full clear view of the road and traffic ahead, obstructing this is an offence."

What does the law say?

It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle.

The law stats you must have hands-free access, such as:

  • a bluetooth headset
  • voice command
  • a dashboard holder or mat
  • a windscreen mount
  • a built-in sat nav

A spokesman added: "The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.

"You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted."

The law still applies if you’re:

  • stopped at traffic lights
  • queuing in traffic
  • supervising a learner driver

You can get 3 penalty points if you don’t have a full view of the road and traffic ahead or proper control of the vehicle.

Where should I place my sat nav?

Advice is to mount your sat nav low down on your windscreen to the far right to keep the majority of your view unimpeded. If this isn’t possible, opt for the lowest point in the middle of the windscreen.
