CROWN green bowling fans are in line for a major boost at Goostrey Village Hall and Playing Fields.

There is huge demand for crown green bowling in Goostrey, but the current bowling facilities at the sports fields have been condemned and are beyond repair.

As a result the Village Hall and Playing Fields Foundation is looking to build a replacement bowling hut off Booth Bed Lane.

Planning permission for the hut is being sought by the foundation from Cheshire East Council.

A report with the application by architects Jay Ashall Partnership said: “The existing bowling facilities on site consist of temporary ‘sheds’, which do not provide adequate services such as sanitary facilities or drinking water.

“The facilities have been subject to vandalism and there is also no secure store for valuable equipment such as the lawn mower.

“The existing bowling facility structures have been condemned and are beyond repair.

“Consequently the only option is to provide a new bowling hut which satisfies the needs of players, spectators and other members of the community.

“Before the creation of the current facilities a survey was completed in Goostrey, the results of which showed there was a major demand for crown green bowling.

“The demographic of Goostrey is an aging population, and as such many residents have taken up bowling, seeing a vast increase in the demand for crown green bowling.

“The original decision of the VHPFF charitable trust to outlay major expenditure on the bowling green has been vindicated, as there are now eight bowling teams, comprising 60 players.

“There are also about 20 casual members and a further two Women's Institute teams who play regularly on the green (Jodrell Side and Goostrey groups).

“This equates to over 100 people who use the current bowling facilities at Goostrey Bowling Club.

“The green is very well cared for by members of the bowling club and other members of the community, and was defined as the Best Kept Bowling Green in Cheshire East.

“This title has brought other teams from around Cheshire East to the Goostrey bowling green to play matches.”

The deadline for comments on the application, reference 19/1925C, is May 15. Comments can be submitted on the Cheshire East Council planning portal.
