CREWE’S Volume Festival takes on an international flavour this year with the addition of Swedish indie band Sad Day For Puppets.

Fronted by singer Anna Eklund, the band have just been added to the line-up for the music festival, which takes place from Thursday May 21 to Monday May 28.

Scores of new and established acts will play throughout the Bank Holiday weekend in eight of the town’s bars and clubs.

Sad Day For Puppets are all about shimmering layers of guitars, intertwining feedback, dreamy melodies and ethereal harmonies.

They come to the Volume Festival on the back a string of European dates and an appearance at the Great Escape festival in Brighton.

The band were selected as ‘radar stars’ in NME and their track Marble Gods was chosen as ‘single of the week’ by Steve Lamacq.

NME said: “Sad Day For Puppets fit into a proud lineage of Swedish bands stretching back to The Concretes and Radio Debt to Abba…and way beyond.”

The first raft of bands to be announced on the Volume line-up includes homegrown talents such as Bleached Wail, Sgt Wolfbanger, Flux and The Troops of Mafeking.

A spokesman for organisers Volume, said: “We’ll be releasing a lot more names as we book them, but safe to say already we are surpassing last year’s event.”

Also on the bill are Cheshire based indie band The Shallow Call who have supported The Enemy, The Charlatans and Little Man Tate.

The band was brought together through a love of The Smiths, Clash, Love, Phil Spector and a shared bemusement with life in their hometown.

They write tales of lousy people in the lousy pubs of lousy towns, casual violence and casual sex.

The Volume Festival will take place at The M Club, The Imp, The Bank, Bar 22, The Waldron, Square One, The Express and The Box.
