A charity is calling on people to follow the Duchess of Sussex’s lead by writing empowering banana messages.

Meghan visited One25 during a visit to Bristol and came up with the idea to pen personal words of positivity on the fruit for street sex workers.

The bananas were part of the food parcels which One25 distributes to sex workers in the city during its night outreach support.

Inspired by the duchess, One25 has launched a #bananamessaging social media campaign, describing it as a “great way to spread empowering messages to people who need to hear them”.

It is encouraging people to share their own banana messaging images, tag their friends, and to find out more about helping women escape from street sex work.

The office of the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens joined in by posting a picture of a banana featuring the words “You are worthy”.

Meghan’s messages to the vulnerable women during her visit on February 1 read, in capital letters and often followed by a heart: “You are strong”, “You are special”, “You are brave” and “You are loved”.

One25 is based in the St Paul’s area of Bristol and helps sex workers break free from a life of violence, poverty and addiction on the streets.

Meghan and the Duke of Sussex were shown around its night outreach van, which offers food, first aid, warm clothing, condoms, safety alarms and a safe space to talk.

The charity’s drop-in centre gives sex-workers practical and emotional support, such as providing lunch, advocacy or delivering crisis care.
