CREWE Alexandra boss Steve Davis has called on the club’s supporters to help them achieve a play-off place.

The Alex are currently 16th in the League Two table but are just seven points behind the final play-off spot, which is currently occupied by Cambridge United.

They drew 1-1 with high-flying Carlisle United at Gresty Road on Boxing Day and their final game of 2016 is also at home against struggling Accrington Stanley on New Year’s Eve, kick off 3pm.

A packed Bank Holiday weekend sees them quickly back in action on Monday when they travel to Morecambe, kick off 3pm.

Davis praised the fans for their role in the draw against the Cumbrians, saying it inspired the team to put on an improved display.

“We had a good vocal support and the atmosphere was different,” he told crewealex.net.

“The players have to get them up for every game. That’s vital to getting the results we need.

“The players were disappointed that we didn’t win the game but you could see the effort they all put in.

“We have shown against the team that is second in the table that we can be as good as them on our day.

“We have had some very disappointing days, hopefully now we have come out of the dip now.”

The Alex have now gone seven games without a win but will be encouraged by their display against Keith Curle’s promotion-chasers.

Former Alex striker Shaun Miller put the visitors ahead, but George Cooper’s stunning free-kick on the stroke of half-time secured a point for the hosts.

Davis was delighted with his side’s performance but admitted the goalscorer’s participation in the game was very much in doubt before kick-off.

“I don’t know what the chances count was but I think we had more of them on the day,” he said.

“I can’t ask for any more, I thought they were terrific all the way through. We had a lot of crosses and a lot of good chances, and we defended well when we had to.

“If you look at the two teams, we looked like the side who are up there. I thought we were slightly better than them.

“George wasn’t even going to play, he has a problem with his groin, but he turned up today and said it felt okay and wanted to play.

“I’m glad he did because he has that ability from the dead ball.”

Another player who earned the manager’s praise was midfielder Charlie Kirk, who put in an excellent performance on Boxing Day and Davis says he deserves to play against Accrington.

“He has been really good in training, so he deserved his opportunity and he didn’t disappoint,” he said.

“He has never run so much as he did in this game, never.

“He has ability and time on his side. He deserves to stay in the team.”
